Mining giant BHP Billiton has submitted a request to the South Australian Government to extend its 15 December deadline for the extension of its Olympic Dam works.

South Australian Minister for Energy, Tom Koutsantonis, and senior members of BHP Billiton had met to discuss the matter.

“Very careful consideration will now be given to the company's request and the reasons given for seeking an extension,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“This careful consideration will include our own due diligence into the changes now being suggested by BHP Billiton as a lower-cost alternative to the proposed expansion comprehensively set out in the company's environmental impact statement.”
