A court has heard taxi drivers ordered an Uber car so that they could bash the driver for “taking away” their business.

Sukhcharan Singh Bal and Jaskirat Singh have been suspended by their employer Black & White Cabs, after the Brisbane Magistrates Court heard they were involved in the alleged ambush of a driver for the ride-sharing service in Fortitude Valley.

Prosecutor Sergeant Scott Pearson said Sukhcharan Singh Bal placed the Uber order on the night of the attacks, and that co-accused Jaskirat Singh joined Bal in the assaults.

Sergeant Pearson described it as an “absolutely pre-meditated set-up”.

He said that when the Uber driver arrived Singh said: “Are you Uber, are you Uber?”

“F*** Uber, you are taking away our business.”

With the driver still sitting in his car, it is alleged that the two punched him and damaged and his vehicle, attempting to tear an entire door off.

It was one of a number of attacks on Uber drivers that weekend.

Black & White Cabs managing director Greg Webb says Bal and Singh have been suspended.

“A driver found guilty of a criminal offence of this nature will be disaffiliated from Black & White Cabs and will not be permitted to drive a taxi for Black & White Cabs at any time in the future,” he told reporters.

He blamed the attacks on the lack of industry regulation.

“We regret that recent regulatory instability within the taxi industry has resulted in vigilante behaviour against individuals and again we reiterate that this behaviour is not tolerated.

“The incident involved actions of rogue individual taxi drivers not working at the time of the assaults. Black & White Cabs does not condone or tolerate unlawful behaviour.”

Ride sharing is currently illegal under Queensland law, but the State Government is looking into ways to allow the new wave of car services into the personal transport industry.
