Recruitment specialist Hays has published its report on employment trends for the October quarter, finding increasing demand for professionals with any experience in the mining and resources sector.

The report found that New South Wales is experiencing  strong demand for senior materials handling engineers, structural engineers and electrical engineers are in short supply. Candidates with mining experience and sound knowledge of Australian design standards are also needed. The state's mining operations continue to struggle to retain key operational personnel, while statutory qualified candidates have a wealth of opportunities to choose from.

In Queensland, mine engineers, mine surveyors and geologists are in demand given an increased workload and shortage of qualified candidates.

South Australia's major mining operators are increasing activity and big recruitment drives are occurring across two major sites, which are filtering through to consultancies and EPCMs

“OneSteel is undergoing port upgrades, while several junior companies are getting close to mining approval. This will have a huge flow-on effect for the local employment market and will provide candidates with a good reason to relocate or return home after working interstate,” the report found.

The report also finds that demand in Western Australia for specialists after  gold, iron ore, minerals sands, copper and nickel projects have seen investment requirements achieved.

This is created great demand for the professional skills involved in mine development, such as Mining Engineers and Geologists. Both Exploration and Mine Geology are in equal demand. Mechanical and structural engineers and drafters at all levels are also experiencing strong demand.
