Figures are out showing Australians have taken to solar energy with great gusto, a report shows how eager people are to cut down their electricity bills.

More than 10 per cent of Australians now use solar power for their homes, according to the newly-released Climate Commission Solar Energy report.

It has found numbers of rooftop solar systems have leapt from just 8000 in 2007 to a staggering one million homes this year, prompting Climate Commission chief Tim Flannery to call it "a solar revolution".

“The things that have happened over the last five years in solar and in Australia weren't anticipated by anyone,” Flannery said, “if you look at the government projections as to how the solar industry was going to develop, they were suggesting it would grow to the point it is now only by 2030... it has added up to a revolution because what it’s done is put in the hands of the people the capacity to generate their own power.”

Big power companies will now be feeling the effects of the solar trend; the report says there has been a decrease in the overall electricity market, as well as a shift in peak use hours. It has raised the possibility of expanded solar facilities to begin to challenge all energy markets; one proposition involves communities deciding on public buildings to be turned in to solar farms for the entire community.

The Climate Commission says Australia leads the world in the number of individual solar installations, but Germany still scores highest for most overall solar capacity. The Commission's latest report is available here.
