Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role
This role is primarily responsible for developing detailed mechanical designs and modifications, providing technical advice associated with rollingstock standards, acquisitions and the operation of passenger rollingstock.  
 
This is a permanent opportunity based in Brisbane.  The hours are 38 hours per week Monday to Friday with work from home provisions available. 
 
Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and review the designs of new rollingstock as well as design sub-system modifications on existing rollingstock.
  • Review technical standards, specifications and other design documentation for rollingstock and associated equipment to ensure performance, operational and minimum safety requirements are fulfilled.
  • Oversee the preparation and development of design documents for the acquisition of passenger rollingstock sub systems.
  • Mentor and coach reporting staff to maximise team performance by providing performance feedback, advice, encouragement, training and professional development.
  • Monitor rollingstock performance, reliability, safety and develop technical standards, designs and modifications for rollingstock to achieve safe, more economic and more reliable operation.

We are seeking interest from people who have: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • A Registered Professional Engineer Queensland, as per the Professional Engineer's Act of Queensland.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members to achieve project goals.
  • Solid understanding of industry standards, regulations, and best practices in mechanical engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Substantial level of skill in carrying out engineering investigations and providing technical advice and engineering reports on all aspects of rollingstock.
