CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join the Metal Industries Program in the Manufacturing Business Unit, to innovate for the Australian metallic additive manufacturing industry. In this role, the Fellow will undertake research on 3D printing for the next generation of smart shape memory alloy (SMA) components and structures. You will use your materials science, additive manufacturing, and engineering skills to design and manufacture SMA prototypes capable of performing complex actuations.

Your duties will include:

  • Selecting and designing SMAs to achieve the desired actuation performance at practical temperature ranges.
  • Fabricating and mechanical testing of SMA samples produced by 3D printing.
  • Investigating the tensile and compressive behaviours of SMA samples at various temperatures.
  • Correlating experimental observations at the microstructural scale to the thermomechanical response of the samples and to the parameters of the 3D printing process.
  • Establishing a processing window for 3D printing of SMAs.
  • Designing and producing a SMA structure prototype with specific actuation performance.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Recognising and exploiting opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progressing opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
  • Utilising design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals, and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects.

Salary:  AU$83K - AU$94K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and other relevant disciplines.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the processing and physical metallurgy of metallic alloys produced by laser based additive manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge in solid-state phase transformations.
  • Experience in experimental microstructural characterization of metals and alloys using microscopy and radiography techniques.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • A sound history of publication in peer reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, grant applications or patents.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
