CSIRO’s Engineering and Technical Services (ETS) team is a land-based team in Hobart, Tasmania.  We currently have an opening for a Mechanical Technician to work alongside our science teams in developing tools to support a diverse range of research projects.  Applications are varied and range across laboratory and field settings; primarily consisting of mechanical engineering practices in the manufacture of science systems and platforms.  

You will work within a small team of six Mechanical Technicians providing engineering solutions to the National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI) business unit and the Marine National Facility (RV Investigator), as well as other business units within CSIRO.  In addition, as part of the ETS, you will provide mechanical support to other science based teams outside of CSIRO, including the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and University of Tasmania (Utas).

In this role you will:

  • Provide technical general engineering within the ETS facility to research programs for both CSIRO and external clients.
  • Design equipment and adapt techniques to meet special circumstances and client needs.
  • Assist the activities of less experienced staff and apprentices and provide on-the-job training.
  • Liaise with internal clients to determine their needs
  • Participate in the planning of projects and accept responsibility for carrying out major parts of these projects.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary technical team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO scientific objectives.


Location:  Hobart, Tasmania
Salary:  AU$64k to AU$82k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:  Indefinite, full-time

To be considered you will need:

  • A relevant trade certificate in Fitting and Machining or Welding, with experience post trade qualification.
  • Welding experience in TIG, MIG, Oxy/Acty in stainless steel and aluminium.
  • The ability to interpret engineering technical drawings.
  • The ability to proactively prioritise competing tasks based on information provided by others.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively in a small team environment, take direction and identify/escalate complex issues where relevant.
  • Strong communication skills and a high level of computer literacy (particularly the Microsoft suite).
