The Department of Defence is seeking to fill the Senior Executive Service Band 1 position of Assistant Secretary Specialist Ships based in Canberra Australian Capital Territory.

The Assistant Secretary Specialist Ships is responsible for acquiring and sustaining the materiel capability of all specialist ships to enable Navy to meet operational requirements, specifically, the maintenance of Navy vessels, encompassing a wide range of activities with high complexity and risk. These functions need to be coordinated closely with the Navy and other activities across the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group and are delivered by a dispersed workforce with a range of expertise and knowledge.

• capable of leading significant and challenging reforms;
• capable of leading Australian Public Service, Australian Defence Force and industry personnel;
• an exceptional communicator and manager with proven negotiation skills; and
• possesses deep knowledge, skills and specialist expertise acquired through significant professional experience.

The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate within the Defence Senior Executive Service Band 1 salary range.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for ongoing appointment, an applicant must be, or intend to become, a permanent Australian citizen. This position is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a security assessment to the appropriate level.
