The Role
The Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) is offering multiple opportunities within the Directorate of Initial Airworthiness (DIA). The DASA website (https://defence.gov.au/DASP) has more information ‘About Us’.

Working in a small team, you will engage with a variety of stakeholders within DASA and across the Defence aviation community. You will develop promotional and guidance material in your expanding area of expertise, seeking every opportunity to share your passion about Defence aviation and its safe conduct.

Role 1 - Initial Airworthiness Regulation and Promotion: your team focus is supporting the Defence community to understand policy related to aircraft design, production and certification. This includes:

  • Maturing the Defence Aviation Safety Regulations (DASR).
  • Responding to policy and DASR queries.
  • Delivering training material.

Role 2 - Type Certification: your team focus is on certification of Defence aircraft. This includes:

  • Interpretation of and assuring compliance with airworthiness requirements.
  • Providing assurance over management of aviation safety risks.

About our Team
The DASA vision ‘Capability First, Safety Always’ reflects our mission in supporting Defence aviation capability, while providing assurance that safety risks are effectively managed. DIA contributes to this by:

  • Promulgating initial airworthiness policy and regulation.
  • Certifying Defence aviation systems.
  • Overseeing design and production organisations.

DASA is a dynamic organisation formed in recent years (see Joint Directive (JD) 21/2021 on our website: https://defence.gov.au/DASP/DASR-Regulations/Default.asp), where you will be able to influence how aviation safety is managed into the future for Defence, while also having an immediate impact on current aviation capability.

We offer a diverse range of work to develop your career in aviation safety and beyond. Shifting priorities require a high degree of flexibility and open up opportunities to work across DASA teams, letting you shape your career progression. Working in the APS is both challenging and rewarding. You can make significant contributions to Australia, whilst supported by flexible employment conditions.

Our Ideal Candidate
DASA is looking for motivated engineers and technical professionals with experience in design, production or management of safety critical systems, ideally within the aviation industry. You are passionate about aviation and the safe conduct of Defence flight operations. You have a keen interest in applying your safety knowledge and expanding your knowledge in the aviation domain. Practical experience in evaluation of safety risks, or exposure to aviation safety is highly desirable.

You apply your critical thinking skills to research and analyse contemporary aviation safety policy and assure the safety of aircraft designs. You work cooperatively across interdisciplinary teams to understand risks and safety implications. You use your experience to determine policy impacts and make recommendations on the certification of aircraft designs. You are confident with your verbal and written communication skills to meet the challenges of communicating your ideas in writing, or presenting to stakeholders with a variety of backgrounds.

Application Closing date: Sunday the 05th of June 2022
