About the role

The Assistant Manager Research and Development (R&D) will play a crucial role in fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment, promoting knowledge sharing and the pursuit of excellence in research and development. Maintaining strong relationships with contractors and educational establishments, the role will ensure alignment with ARWA’s objectives, fostering a commitment to unbiased research, safety and technical excellence. The Assistant Manager R&D will continuously expand their knowledge and expertise in relevant areas, by actively contributing to developing and implementing long-term R&D strategies. 

Reporting to the Manager Planning and Implementation, the Assistant Manager R&D will lead strategic research projects aimed at exploring possible methodologies and strategies to support the delivery of ARWA’s programs and projects. The role is also responsible for seeking and maintaining key relationships with industry, universities and research organisations to strengthen ARWA’s research outcomes. The role will work collaboratively across all work functions of ARWA to ensure the highest levels of safety, security and sustainability is achieved. 

What are we looking for

• Relevant experience in identification of research needs and objectives and formulating appropriate research activities to further understanding.
• High-level research and analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to identify and exploit emerging technical and business opportunities and provide high level strategic advice.
• Experience in identifying and developing innovative opportunities in emerging research areas and proven adaptability to respond to new research challenges. 
• Ability to plan and manage interactive programmes of work to ensure milestones are achieved and delivered to the required standard. 
• Proven track record of producing technical documentation within time, cost, and quality constraints and for a range of audiences.

Desirable Characteristics:

• Sound understanding of Commonwealth Government processes. 
• Demonstrated knowledge in relevant specialist areas and understanding of the R&D needs for management and disposal of radioactive waste. 
• Understanding of R&D and how it impacts on Intellectual Property laws, rights and protection mechanisms. 
• Relevant experience in working in the delivery of radioactive waste management and disposal programs and projects. 

Qualification/s: 

• Tertiary qualification in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline (or equivalent skills, knowledge, and experience).
